Yeh, another post vaguely inspired by PageRank - rather backwards looking really isn’t it. But I’m not here to talk about PageRank, quite frankly the debate has to move on from there, and swiftly.
People have been stuck on that value for too long, and are getting fed up with it. Intead of everyone whining about it, move on from it. Some people already are, including myself. PayPerPost is set to release Argus soon - which will supposedly move away from PageRank as the big indicator for pricing and the “wow factor”. Good for them I say!
I’ve also been planning a move away from PR for my own creation for a while now. Instead, I’ll be looking to make sure bloggers have up to the minute traffic stats to display to readers and advertisers alike - and as things develop, we can start to look at what is really important on the analytics front for bloggers.
Remember, as I said in my previous post, you have the ability to measure the value of your pages very precisely, through analytics software. If you’re not taking advantage of it, then start doing so. If you are, then let’s make sure we start a debate on how it can best be used. Visual representations will most likely become a big feature for example (click heatmaps) - turning raw data into something useful for advertisers to see and evaluate.
Some thought also needs to go into analysing the quality of traffic data. It’s not all about volume; many other factors are involved. Repeat visitors, time of stay, what they are looking at - it is all important, and it’s a big job, but I hope that finally we are seeing a move forward.
So, let’s make sure we are talking about that move!
