Response to: 45n5 comment

Today, one of my users pointed me in the direction of his comment at 45n5.com - where he asked what the blog’s author (Mark) thought of my project (OIOpublisher.com), when stacked against his own (ShowYourAdHere.com). I was rather disappointed by Mark’s response, as it seemed like an attempt to put my own work down, rather than trying to compare anything.

Comment Commenting:

I’ve copied Mark’ comment below (in italics), and below are my own thoughts on what he said, looking out how OIOpublisher really performs:

Keep 100% is misleading. Paypal obviously takes a cut.
That’s being rather picky, and not the way most people would view it (better than 75% though).

They have no rating system like showyouradhere.
Actually, both ratings and comment feedback is included (although I agree, it needs improvement).

They don’t help you geotarget ads.
No, but then showyouradhere doesn’t do 90% of the things that OIOpublisher does (really). Having said that, geolocation would become a factor when I introduce the adnetwork “filler” option.

They don’t help you rotate ads.
Um, yes, they do.

They are on shared hosting with a few hundred other questionable sites. Not the worst thing but..
Low blow there; the primary service at this stage is a downloadable plugin anyway. Upgrades will be made when required, but actually, a good shared server can handle more than you’d think, if things are coded well. No point shelling out on hardware that isn’t needed yet.

They appear shady “promote using a search engine secure marketplace” why does the marketplace need to be secure from search engines?
I’m sure Mark knows exactly why that has been done. I am pro user choice, therefore users are able to choose whether to use nofollow or not. And if they choose not to, its wise not to leave them exposed in any way. Sensible yes, shady no.

They don’t manage hosting of the ads.
That’s neither an advantage or dis-advantage. Some people would rather ads be hosted, some would rather have complete control. It’s a choice.

Plus ShowYourAdHere.com is cooler and helps you manage multiple adzones across multiple blogs all from one spot!
Hehe, I liked this comment best. What is the rating factor for “coolness” when it comes to tech solutions? In my opinion, innovation and functionality. Using those criteria, SYAH has nothing on OIOpublisher. That’s not an attack on Mark’s project, but his goals are a lot more conservative than my own.

Just off the top of my head. They might be nice people and have a great solution, just not one for me.
He’s right there, we are nice people (as I’m sure he is). And yes, it is true OIOpublisher wouldn’t work for him, because he doesn’t have Wordpress, and wants hosted banner ad management.

Conclusion:

In truth, a comparison is very hard. The target audiences, while not mutually exclusive, are different. Both projects take entirely different approaches to ad management, and OIOpublisher is evolving beyond just ad management, to a full monetisation suite. And lets not forget that my project is Wordpress specific for now.

Well, there we have it. I’ve got nothing against Mark personally, in fact if he ever reads this, I’d love to get him onboard my group collaboration project (bloggers need to see the value in teamwork more!). I think SYAH will provide a good service, and perform well. And of course, it can be used in tandem with OIOpublisher without any problems!
