Just noticed a few posts being put into the google supplemental index when doing a “site” syntax search. I’ve made a couple more changes to try and stop more posts from going supplemental, although I realise that the best way to keep results in the main index is through building back links from other relevant pages / domains. Prevention is better than a cure though!
Having read a post by Aaron Wall on his blog here, has led me to think that my duplicate content plugin is at least on the right track, especially seeing Aaron’s words about wasting link authority through indexing “fluff” pages. It’s all a bit of trial and error anyway (at least for me!), and so indexing a minimal number of pages to start with makes sense. I can always look to add more pages into the index later on. Once the link brokering system we’re working on is operational, I can start to use it myself to get some link backs to individual post pages, as well as the main pages.
I’ve also added a sitemap page to the blog, and re-structured the heiracy tags and internal linking system a little. I’ll be keeping an eye on page indexing over the next few weeks, and seeing what happens.
I’m currently working on a Wordpress plugin for the link brokering publishing system - which means I need to read up more on widgets, to see if we can use visual manipulation of link placement, instead of asking users to edit templates every time. All that will be solved by the addition of in content linking later on though.
