New Years Newsletter

Published by Simon on January 17th, 2008

Apologies for missing out the December newsletter entirely, but I decided that during the Holiday period, there would be little point in sending it out. Besides, I have some better things to mention to you now:

(1) OIOpublisher Goes Pro:

The latest release, out yesterday, is marked v1.50. It also sees the beginning of the “Pro” edition of the Wordpress plugin, due to all the features now packed into it. I have decided to release a lite version for free, that will meet the original design spec (dealing with paid reviews and text links) - keep checking back at the site for details [..]

Ploughing Onwards

Published by Simon on January 13th, 2008

Just a short update post.

(1) We’ve started to see a nice increase in sales lately, which is good allround. One new user experienced a few problems with his particular setup, which led to me taking a look myself, and diagnosing a couple of compatibility issues that will be fixed in the next release. Always happy to improve the platform!

(2) New features are coming, mainly in the way of expanding what is already there. I now have support for unlimited banner zones up and running, and will do the same for custom purchases too. There is an admin purchase creation / editing feature now in place, which was requested by a number of users. A few other tweaks coming too, which should enhance the user experience. No set date for release [..]

Documentation Library Underway

Published by Simon on January 3rd, 2008

Having tied up a couple of major features for 2007, my first task for 2008 is to start writing up all documentation connected to the project. Other than the FAQs page, and a README file within the Wordpress plugin, I’m going to admit that documentation is a little sparse so far.

But soon that will be history!

I’m using DocMint (they call it a documentation CMS) to organise all OIOpublisher documentation. It’s half way between a plain text document, and a wiki, in my opnion. Only admins can write documentation, but all members can add user notes (akin to comments on a blog post) to enhance the experience for other users. Notes may also be incorporated into core documentation if necessary.

You must be logged in to your OIOpublisher account to leave [..]

Tracker Module Released

Published by Simon on December 30th, 2007

The new tracker module is in the download area, and allows blog owners to keep track of the click-through rates of individual purchases (including text links, inline ads, and banner ads).

A pixel image is added to the footer of the blog, and tracks impressions for each ad independently. The urls of every ad are then automatically re-written to record clicks made, and then redirect the user on to the target website.

Every 24 hours (just after midnight, server time), a cron job runs to archive all of the previous day’s data, to keep database usage to a minimum. The impressions and clicks tables are then emptied ready for the next day. There is a manual update button within the admin area should the cron job fail for any reason.

Each advertiser receives [..]

Keeping Safe, Search Engines

Published by Simon on December 18th, 2007

A quick note initially - access to OIOpublisher downloads and services now requires a one-off $37 fee for new users. Early adopters are not affected. Members can also earn 50% commission on all referral sales.

Next up, nofollow! A hot topic recently, with the uproar surrounding Google and PageRank. Whilst the choice of what to do with links should always be left down to the individual webmaster, I’d like to make clear that OIOpublisher is fully Google compliant.

All sales options, including text links and banners, come with the nofollow attribute as standard. This means that a new user cannot be penalized by a search engine for making sales through our sales platform. That should be good news all round! [..]
